An exciting opportunity to join our team and gain hands-on experience in the creative industry.
The role: Magazine Assistant (12 months)
- Hours: 2 days per week, flexible working options
- Contract: 12 months fixed-term
- Pay: £20k annual salary, pro rata
- Location: Barry, Vale of Glamorgan. Please note: due to the specific funding of this opportunity, applications from those currently living within Barry will be prioritised.
We’re an independent literary magazine dedicated to publishing bold new voices and celebrating great writing from and connected to Wales. Thanks to local funding, we have the chance to offer a year-long position within our team, as part of an annual internship opportunity for hands-on experience in the creative industry – from our base in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan.
We’re looking for someone passionate about books, writing and reading to join our small team as Magazine Assistant. Applications are open to all over 18 at the point of application, and to any experience or qualification level. However, we will prioritise those living in or around the Barry area, and we’d like to see evidence of an interest in, and engagement with, the literary world.
Our team is small, friendly, and dedicated to making a genuine impact within the literary industry. The Magazine Assistant will work alongside the co-founders of the magazine Kathryn Tann and Rob Harries, as well as our Marketing and Sales Manager, to support the work we do and help nurture our growing community.
The internship will have a particular focus on digital content and our events programme, and will culminate in the design of an in-person creative writing event in Barry, with a dedicated budget to deliver this.
As Magazine Assistant, you will:
- Monitor our office email inbox and respond to customer queries
- Draft and create social media content, helping our Marketing and Sales Manager to grow the magazine’s online audience in new and creative ways
- Compile and create our monthly newsletter
- Help to plan and deliver a growing programme of online and in-person events for both readers and writers
- Provide administrative support across the magazine’s activities
- Research relevant new book titles, authors, stockists, and developments in the industry
- Update the Folding Rock website with new content.
Our ideal candidate:
- Enjoys working with words and stories
- Has excellent written skills and the ability to adapt tone to different styles, channels and contexts
- Is confident using social media for an organisation
- Is a great communicator by email, direct message, or face-to-face
- Stays on top of digital trends, and has an eye for good branding, design and aesthetics
- Is organised, reliable and able to manage your own time
- Is comfortable working independently
- Has a genuine interest in reading and writing, the arts, particularly within Wales, and ambitions for a career in publishing or the creative industries.
Working with us:
Though we are a mostly remote-working team, we meet and hold events at our shared office at Tramshed Tech in Barry. The co-working space there – and all its member benefits – will be available for you to use throughout the internship.
Our Magazine Assistant will also be encouraged to attend editorial meetings and shadow work that you have a particular interest in. Informal training will be available if desired in tools like Adobe, WordPress, Canva etc.
Folding Rock is a relatively new and growing organisation, meaning you’ll have the chance to contribute ideas, creative thinking, and help make a real impact at this exciting time for our magazine.

About Folding Rock
Founded in 2024 following the award of landmark funding from the Books Council of Wales, Folding Rock is Wales’s newest and boldest literary magazine – publishing the best creative prose from established and emerging writers. Following in the footsteps of The Stinging Fly in Ireland, Gutter in Scotland and Granta in England, Folding Rock is a print-first publication that showcases excellent new fiction and non-fiction creative writing as well as beautiful design and illustration.
Our magazine is a high-quality publication, printed in Wales by the historic Gomer Press and released thrice-yearly in March, July and November. Issues are made up of a combination of commissioned pieces and open submissions, as well as occasional interviews, critical essays and visual art. We also publish free-to-read content on our website including feature articles and book reviews.
You can find out more about our vision and mission here, and check out some of the work we’ve done so far by exploring the Folding Rock website.
