Folding Rock are over the moon to finally be able to announce the full line-up of writers for our first issue, out in March 2025. These names join Sophie Mackintosh, Joe Dunthorne, Durre Shahwar and Joshua Jones, who we announced as the first four writers in December:
- Pamela Petro
- Rachel Dawson
- Brigid Lowe
- Eluned Gramich
- Anthony Shapland
- Jay Griffiths
- Maya Jones
- Mari Huws Jones
- Philippa Ball Lewis
- Liberty Smith
Tied together by the theme of ‘Roots’, the issue will showcase a mixture of fiction and creative non-fiction pieces written by some of the best writers from Wales and beyond, curated by editors Rob Harries (fiction) and Kathryn Tann (non-fiction). Issue 001 fulfils our aim to bring together established names with lesser-known (for now!) writers, and shine a spotlight on the breadth and depth of literary talent coming out of Wales today.
We were bowled over by the work submitted to us for this first call, and by the endless talent of our commissioned authors. As editors, we were faced with the best problem of all: too much excellent writing, and not enough pages. So thank you, everyone, who sent us your words.

We have also unveiled the cover design for our first issue, made by Cardiff-based illustrator and designer Matt Needle, whose illustrations intersperse the stories of its the pages. As our Artistic Director, Matt has created a unique and eye-catching visual brand for Folding Rock, turning this issue into an art piece as well as an anthology. Not to mention a host of other visuals and photography set among our writers’ words, including drawings from Queertawe zine artist Breifni Hedd.
The theme of ‘Roots’ has been interpreted in many different ways by this brilliant list of contributors, including themes of family, memory, landscape – and a touch of the uncanny. Readers can look forward to brand new and original writing, including gripping short stories, beautiful memoir, a multi-sensory photo essay, and a reflective delve into new nature writing from Wales. We also chose ‘roots’ as our theme because it represents where we are at this moment in time: setting down our roots as a magazine, and establishing a strong foundation for years to come.
